3M Knowingly Sold Defective Earplugs to U.S. Military

The U.S. government issued 3M Combat Arms Earplugs (CAEv2) to military personnel from 2003 to 2015. The earplugs had a unique dual-end design, with one end to protect all sound and the other end to protect against explosions but transparent enough for soldiers to hear spoken commands or approaching enemies. The earplugs didn’t maintain a tight seal and allowed dangerously loud noises to slip through without the soldiers knowing.

Veterans allege 3M defectively designed the earplugs, failed to warn of the risks, and did not provide adequate instructions for their use. 3M’s failures resulted in soldiers coming home with hearing loss, tinnitus, and loss of balance. As of August 2019, more than 2,000 soldiers had filed lawsuits in a Florida federal court against 3M and its subsidiary, Aearo Technologies, for knowingly committing fraud against the U.S. Military, failing to warn of the earplugs’ defects, and falsifying earplug test results.

Hearing loss can be debilitating. If you dutifully served your country and have hearing loss from 3M’s defective earplugs, you deserve compensation. Hire an experienced attorney to handle your claim. This is not a lawsuit against the government. Call today for a confidential and free consultation.

In The News: Tinnitus & Hearing Loss Among U.S. Troops & Veterans

In July of 2018, 3M paid a whopping $9.1 million to settle Department of Defense allegations that 3M sold dangerous and defective Combat Arms Earplugs (CAEv2) to the military for more than a decade without warning they were defective.

Combat veterans are suing 3M for earplug defects, alleging they cause hearing loss and tinnitus. 3M Combat Arms Earplugs have caused severe hearing loss among troops and veterans. Hearing loss is the third-most prevalent health condition in the U.S. and a top medical issue for military personnel. Hearing loss can be a devastating long-term and permanent condition. Because hearing loss is often untreatable, it is essential to follow the right prevention techniques. 3M failed our military in the design and distribution of defective earplugs.

Tinnitus Symptoms

Tinnitus can cause annoying sounds in quiet surroundings that only the sufferer can hear, including: Ringing, Hissing, Clicking, Buzzing, Roaring, and Whistling.

Tinnitus is characterized by intermittent or continuous ear ringing at various volume levels. Tinnitus is the most common disability among veterans from exposure to extremely damaging sounds such as gunfire, aircraft, machinery, and explosions. 3M’s dual-ended earplugs were supposed to protect soldiers from these damaging noises but were found to be severely defective, leaving military personnel vulnerable to tinnitus and hearing loss. Many veterans experiencing tinnitus find it debilitating and life-altering, causing insomnia and difficulty concentrating. In most cases, the condition caused by defective 3M earplugs is permanent.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

A person’s hearing may fade away gradually and as the condition worsens, a person may find it increasingly difficult to hear others clearly and may ask others to speak up. A person may also experience ringing in the ears and sensitivity to sound.

As of April 2020, over 140,000 service members and Army veterans suffering from hearing damage have joined the defective 3M earplugs lawsuit. 3Ms dual-ended Earplugs Combat Arms may have caused thousands, if not millions, of our soldiers to suffer hearing loss and tinnitus, and the pain and suffering that comes with these conditions.

Typical victims are veterans between the ages of 30 and 49 who served in the Army and allege a combination of tinnitus and hearing loss. Consumer Coalition is getting calls, web inquires, and emails from victims with hearing issues seven days a week about these claims. In the 3M CAEv2 earplug lawsuits, it's our turn to fight for the same brave men and women that have fought to protect us all.
